Photography, from a passion to a profession

Post by simarahman5835 »

At the beginning, I knew nothing about entrepreneurship. I didn't charge much for my services and my equipment wasn't very professional. I was a good photographer but a very bad salesperson. I asked myself a lot of questions and tried to structure my business. I started my company in April 2017 but I had a day job on the side. In September, at the end of my fixed-term contract, I decided to go full-time on my own.

Congratulations for taking the plunge and working full-time on your project! You define yourself as a positive photographer, an ethical photographer, what does that mean to you?

When I started, I mainly did event photography and until 2019 my belgium whatsapp communication was more focused on corporate. I was in execution. I was asked to come on a certain day, at a certain time and I would shoot. Last year, I realized that it didn't really suit me. So, I reviewed my positioning at the end of 2019/beginning of 2020.

The term positive photographer is a parallel with my daily life and my civic commitment. In my personal life, I am in a zero waste approach, I got rid of my car, I became a vegetarian. In short, I pay attention because I am very sensitive to the state of the planet. I want to give meaning to my work. I want my actions to go in the same direction as my values.

This way of defining my job is also a parallel with who I am and what I transmit, through my communication for example. I am an optimistic person who sends good vibes. I like to set an example, that small efforts are easy to achieve and to relay information related to ecology.

I know few photographers who have the same approach as me and integrate eco-responsibility into their profession.
